Nestled in the Lowlands of Scotland, at O’Cathian Farm near Jackton, South Lanarkshire, Jackton Distillery is quietly forging a new path in the world of Scotch. Founded in 2020, the distillery is the home of the daring and independent brand Raer, which blends tradition with innovation in every drop.

I had the fantastic opportunity to pay them a visit and meet Katie O’Brien who gave us a very warm welcome and provided us with an exquisite tour of the distillery. I even got a few driver’s bottles so I could sample their amazing products at home safely. I am not really convinced by blended whisky usually but I liked what I tasted and was even more impressed by their beer (which is currently only available at the distillery). Furthermore for whisky as well as gin and wodka Jackton provide some amazing cocktail recipes you should definitely try!

A Fresh Approach to Scotch
What sets Jackton apart?
- Grain-to-glass ethos: The team grow their own barley on the estate and oversee the process from field to bottle.
- Independent & bold: Raer describes itself as a “new voice in Scotch whisky” — inclusive, modern, and unafraid to shake up norms.
- Production versatility: While still young, the distillery produces gin, vodka and malt whisky, and houses both dunnage and racked warehouses.

Tasting Notes & Values
Their signature blended Scotch delivers rich notes of citrus, sweet caramel and warm depth — designed to appeal to new and seasoned drinkers alike.
Beyond flavour, the ethos of Jackton / Raer emphasises sustainability, craft authenticity and a community-oriented spirit.

Visitor Experience
For those keen to explore: Tours are available at the distillery, offering a behind-the-scenes look at malting, mashing, fermentation and distillation — followed by a tasting session of Raer whisky.
Why It’s Worth Visiting (or Following)
- Because it represents something dynamic — a young distillery challenging the status quo of Scotch whisky.
- Because it’s rooted in place: the land, the barley, the family-run nature.
- Because the product is starting strong, even before the single malts mature fully.
- Because it fits well with conversations around tourism, craftsmanship and making meaningful travel choices.
In the Context of Responsible Travel
Starfish Travel’s ethos of sustainability and respect for local culture aligns seamlessly with the philosophy behind Raer Distillery. Both share a commitment to authenticity, environmental consciousness, and community connection.
At Raer, whisky is crafted from locally grown barley, distilled on the family’s own land, and produced with transparency and care — reflecting a deep respect for the environment and tradition. Similarly, Starfish Travel champions journeys that celebrate local heritage and craftsmanship while minimizing ecological impact.
Including Raer Distillery in a Starfish Travel tour itinerary offers more than a tasting experience; it provides travellers with a tangible link to Scotland’s land, people, and evolving craft culture. It’s where responsible travel meets responsible production — a true celebration of place, purpose, and sustainability.
Last but not least
I truly cannot wait to try Jackton’s single malt coming very soon and meanwhile there are so many reasons to visit: There is a mothly market of local makers and and you can even stay at the distillery. So much to explore and to learn about how this place fits its community.
